Yiaga Opposes Plans to Abolish State Independent Electoral Commissions

Yiaga Africa has opposed plans to abolish the State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) and transferring their duties to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Recall that in May, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, had advocated scrapping of SIECs.

Speaking in Abuja at the national discourse recently, Fagbemi said scrapping state electoral commissions would allow democracy to take its roots in the local governments through a robust constitutional amendment.

Meanwhile, reacting to the development on Friday, the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, Samson Itodo, said abolishing the SIECs and transferring their responsibilities to INEC would overstretch the commission and undermine the autonomy of states.
